One of the actions in the Clare Heritage Plan 2003-2007 is to develop a Local Biodiversity Action Plan, and Clare is the first county in Ireland to produce a local Biodiversity Action Plan.

As a result of this initiative a local Nature Reserve or Wildlife Area was identified in Shannon Town.The Shannon Wetlands Group was formed to manage this project. The group is funded by the Heritage Council.

The Wetlands Group is part of   Dúchas na Sionna , a local heritage group based in Shannon Town.
